What is this research study about?

This study aims to understand people’s experiences of receiving an autism diagnosis in adulthood, factors related to age of diagnosis, beliefs about living with an autism diagnosis, and experiences of support.

Why should I help?

We hope to use information we get from this research study to help other adults who undergo autism assessment and diagnosis. The findings could help us to make recommendations to health professionals to promote recognition of autism and tailored support after diagnosis for adults.

Who can take part?

Any adult with a formal diagnosis or thinks they may be on the autism spectrum is welcome to participate, but currently we are looking for adults who were diagnosed before age 18 and adults with intellectual disability and autism. We are also looking for carers/support personswho helped an adult get an autism diagnosis.

Please view the flyers below to see if you are eligible.

Who is conducting this study?

This study is funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Living with Autism (Autism CRC) and the Australian Government Research Training Program.

Researchers from University of New South Wales and La Trobe University are conducting this study.

What will I be asked to do?

If you decide to take part in the online survey, you will answer questions about yourself, your pathway to autism diagnosis, your attitudes and beliefs about the diagnosis, and your experiences of support during and after diagnosis.

If you decide to take part in the interview, we will talk to you about your experiences of support during and after your diagnosis of autism. This could be done face-to-face, via telephone, online video, Skype instant messaging or email depending on your location and preferences.

You will have the chance to win a $100 gift card for completing the survey, and/or receive a $60-$80 gift card for the interview depending on format.

When and where?

You can complete the online survey on your own device in any location with an internet connection.

The interview will be at Randwick campus, UNSW Sydney if you choose to meet us face-to-face. Otherwise you can talk to us on the phone or online at any location.
