What is this research study about?

This study aims to investigate how often, and in what contexts, Autistic adults experience violence compared to non-Autistic adults. We also want to identify what might put people at risk, or protect them from risk of experiencing violence. We are also interested in the impact these experiences have had on their lives.

Why should I help?

Research has shown that children on the autism spectrum are at higher risk of experiencing abuse and victimisation. However, there have been few studies focused on adulthood. This study will shed light on the personal safety of Autistic adults living in Australia.

Who can take part?

You are invited to take part in this study if you

  • have previously been diagnosed with Autism (including Autistic Disorder, autism spectrum disorder, Asperger’s syndrome/disorder, PDD-NOS, atypical autism) or you self-identify as Autistic
  • are aged 18 years or over
  • have lived in Australia for the past 5 years
  • have not been diagnosed with intellectual disability or severe mental illness (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or other delusional disorder)

Who is conducting this study?

Vicki Gibbs, Professor Liz Pellicano and Professor Jennie Hudson of Macquarie University will be conducting this study. The project also receives guidance from an Autistic Advisory group.

What will I be asked to do?

If you decide to take part, we will ask you to complete a survey about your background, any experiences of violence since the age of 15 and your social and emotional functioning.

Autistic adults who complete the survey and who have reported experiencing violence will be invited to take part in an interview at a mutually convenient time, in person if they live in Sydney or by phone or online meeting such as Zoom or Facetime.

The survey will take about 45 minutes to complete. Participants will receive a $15 e-gift voucher. The interview will take about one hour and participants will receive a $25 gift voucher. You can participate in the survey without participating in the interview.
